From a Narrow Room to a New Life: The Story of Marwan, Who Walked Again Thanks to the Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center in Taiz, Yemen
Marwan Ahmed Naji Obaid did not dream of much. His wishes were simple: honest work, a warm home, and a small family he could provide for with dignity. He worked in a clothing store in Yemen, earning his living day by day, until a single accident changed everything.
An Accident on the Way Home from Work
One day, while returning from work, Marwan was involved in a terrible traffic accident. The injury was serious, and the doctors later told him that amputating his leg had become necessary. Describing that moment, Marwan says: “I felt that the world had gone dark in front of me.”
Hundreds of Days in Bed
After the accident, Marwan’s life came to a standstill. For hundreds of days he stayed bedridden, depending on his wife for his most basic daily needs. The pain was not only physical. He felt he had become a burden on his family, when he had always been their support.
A Glimmer of Hope
The turning point came when a colleague told him about the Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center in Taiz. As the sign at its entrance shows, the center carries the name of the IRVD association and the logo of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre. Marwan decided to make one last attempt. The medical team welcomed him, examined his condition, and designed a suitable prosthetic limb for him.
The Surprise
The prosthetic limb was light and easy to use. Marwan says: “I walked from the very first day, as if I had never lost my foot.” After training and follow-up at the center, he returned to his family and now walks on his own, goes to the market, meets his friends, and plays with his children.
Back to Life
The ordinary things that once felt like dreams are possible again. Marwan ends his story with a message of thanks to everyone who helped him: “This prosthetic limb has brought life back to my body once again.”
Marwan’s story is one of thousands of stories that have started anew at prosthetics and rehabilitation centers across the Republic of Yemen. These centers are operated by the International Wars and Disasters Victims Protection Association (Alameen), under the supervision of the Curative Medicine Sector at the Ministry of Public Health and Population, and with support from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre.
With this support, Alameen Organization continues to create new beginnings for people who have returned to walking, working, and living the details of their normal lives, and to be part of new stories of hope. To learn more about the organization’s work
