World Mental Health Day: A Small Step Today Can Make a Big Difference

Every year on the tenth of October, the world marks World Mental Health Day, an occasion that reminds communities that mental health is an essential part of human health, not a luxury or a secondary concern. At Al-Ameen Organization (Munazzamat Al-Ameen), we believe that mental health is no less important than physical health, and that a person cannot live a balanced life if either one is neglected.

Why is mental health so important?

The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease. This means that our sense of calm, our ability to cope with life’s pressures, and our relationships with others are all fundamental elements of our overall health. When mental health suffers, it affects sleep, work, study, and family and social relationships.

Even so, many people still hesitate to talk about their feelings or to ask for help, whether out of fear of how society will view them or because of the mistaken belief that psychological struggle is a flaw. In truth, acknowledging mental exhaustion is a brave step, and asking for support is a sign of awareness and responsibility toward oneself.

Start with a small step today

Caring for your mental health does not require big changes all at once. It is enough to begin with simple steps you can stick to:

  1. Set aside a few minutes each day for calm, whether through deep breathing, walking, or sitting away from noise.
  2. Keep a regular sleep routine as far as possible, since good sleep directly affects mood and concentration.
  3. Talk to someone you trust about how you feel, because sharing lightens the load.
  4. Look after your physical activity and nutrition, since body and mind influence each other.
  5. Take breaks from the news and social media when you feel overwhelmed.

When does seeking support become necessary?

If feelings of sadness, anxiety or exhaustion last for a long time, or affect your daily life and your ability to carry out your tasks, it is important not to wait until things get worse. Reach out to a mental health professional, or to someone close to you who can support you and accompany you in seeking help. If you are in an acute crisis or are thinking of harming yourself, go immediately to the nearest medical facility or emergency service available in your area.

Our message on World Mental Health Day

On this day, we invite you to make your mental health a priority, to start with a small step today, and not to hesitate to ask for support when you need it. Caring for mental health is a shared responsibility, and the more we raise awareness and break the silence, the more compassionate our society becomes and the better able it is to embrace its members.
