Hope in a New Step — Daris’s Story with a Prosthetic Limb
Daris Thabit used to live a simple life, working as a driver to support his family, finding in that daily routine both meaning and dignity. But war does not ask about people’s dreams or plans. The conditions of the Yemeni crisis forced him to flee from Reema to Marib, and then to Taiz, searching for a safe corner where he could gather himself and protect his family.
In the middle of this forced displacement, Daris was near areas of clashes when a bullet struck him above the knee. The injury led to the amputation of his leg after exhausting attempts to save it. In a single moment, the man who used to drive his car and provide for his family became someone who struggled to stand on his own feet. He spent the months that followed in a painful battle against a heavy sense of helplessness, feeling as though hope was quietly slipping through his fingers.
But the story did not end at that dark moment.
Daris made his way to the Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center in Taiz, supported by the Al-Ameen Humanitarian Support Organization (IRVD) with funding from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center — KSRelief. There, a different journey began: a journey of treatment, rehabilitation, and rebuilding oneself. In August 2023, Daris received a prosthetic limb that restored his ability to move, and gave him something even more precious — a new beginning.
The photos documenting his journey capture what words often cannot. In one of them, Daris walks between the parallel bars, gripping them with both hands, wearing the kind of smile that only those who have fought a long and difficult battle — and won — truly understand. In another, he shakes hands with one of the doctors the way old friends do, as if the two are celebrating a shared victory together.
Today, Daris continues to follow up on his condition and maintain his prosthetic limb with regular visits to the center. He has returned to living his life with greater confidence than perhaps before the injury — because someone who has touched the depths of despair and climbed back up knows the true value of every step they take. Daris expresses deep gratitude for the support that restored his hope, and for the organization that gave him back the ability to stand beside his family once again.
Daris’s story is not an exception in the records of Al-Ameen Humanitarian Support Organization — IRVD. It is a model for hundreds of cases the organization works daily to transform from tragedy into hope, from brokenness into healing. In a country torn apart by war, humanity remains the only answer that stands firm against everything.
