Strengthening Health Response in Northwest Syria: UN Visit Highlights Collaborative Efforts at Al-Ameen-Operated Center in Maarat al-Numan

As part of efforts to enhance the health response in northwest Syria, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Mr. Adam Abdelmoula, visited the Maarat al-Numan Health Center, operated by the International Association “Al-Ameen”. During his visit, he closely examined the state of medical services provided and the needs of the local population.

Mr. Abdelmoula was accompanied by Ms. Cristina Petchke, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Syria, and Mr. Kifah Al-Jaafar, Maarat al-Numan Area Director, underscoring the importance of coordination between local and international actors and reinforcing multi-level partnerships to support the healthcare system.

During the visit, the center’s medical supervisor, Dr. Tarraf Tarraf, presented a detailed overview of ongoing services and the daily challenges faced by health workers, including infrastructure needs and the importance of sustained support to ensure continued healthcare delivery in this affected area.

At the conclusion of the visit, Mr. Abdelmoula reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the health sector in Syria, emphasizing that improving the quality of medical services in conflict-affected areas is an urgent humanitarian priority. This, he noted, requires enhanced cooperation with partner organizations and local authorities to secure essential supplies and strengthen the capacities of healthcare personnel.

The World Health Organization plays a pivotal role in enabling the delivery of primary healthcare services in the region through its funding of the Maarat al-Numan Health Center. This is achieved in collaboration with the International Association “Al-Ameen”, which operates the center and coordinates its field activities. This partnership represents a successful model of integration between international organizations and local implementers in meeting both urgent and chronic health needs.

The International Association “Al-Ameen” reaffirms its commitment to continuing its efforts in close partnership with UN agencies—particularly the World Health Organization—and with local authorities to ensure an effective and sustainable health response that strengthens the resilience of the Syrian health system and alleviates the suffering of affected populations.
