Workshop: Prosthetics as the Key to a Better Life and Social Integration in Yemen

As part of the inaugural conference on the health system in Yemen, the Ministry of Health and Population, under the auspices of Mr. Qasim Buhibeh and in partnership with the International Association for the Care of War and Disaster Victims – Al-Ameen, organized a specialized workshop highlighting the role of prosthetics in improving the lives of people with disabilities and enhancing their social integration.

A New Vision for Empowering People with Disabilities

The workshop discussed the importance of prosthetics not only as medical tools but as a means to rebuild lives and enable individuals to regain their independence. It also addressed the challenges faced by people with disabilities, from difficulty accessing specialized health services to the need for comprehensive psychological and rehabilitative support that boosts their confidence and helps them integrate effectively into society.

Continuous Support for Developing Health Services

In this context, Dr. Mohammad Deeb Darba, the regional director of the International Association for the Care of War and Disaster Victims – Al-Ameen in Yemen, praised the efforts of the Ministry of Health in supporting the rights of people with disabilities and promoting a comprehensive and advanced health system that ensures their easy and efficient access to integrated services. He emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to expand the scope of services and develop more sustainable strategies that effectively meet the needs of this group.

Towards More Efficient and Sustainable Services

The discussions focused on the necessity of expanding the scope of specialized services for prosthetics and rehabilitation and facilitating access to psychological support alongside healthcare, ensuring a more holistic approach to the needs of people with disabilities. It was also proposed that the Ministry of Health establish a national guide and strategy to organize prosthetics and rehabilitation programs, contributing to the unification of service delivery mechanisms and achieving uniform and sustainable quality standards.

Empowering People with Disabilities: More Than Just Treatment

Participants in the workshop emphasized that improving the quality of prosthetic services is not limited to providing devices but requires training medical staff and developing specialized facilities to ensure the sustainability of care. The importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors was also highlighted to support innovation in prosthetics technologies and provide more advanced and suitable solutions for the beneficiaries’ needs.

In this context, the attendees stressed that the biggest challenge is not only in providing prosthetics but in building a supportive environment that allows individuals to regain their social and professional roles. Recommendations emerged to intensify vocational rehabilitation programs and provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities, contributing to their effective integration into the social and economic fabric.

Ongoing Commitment to Achieving Change

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations and proposals aimed at enhancing the health system in Yemen and improving the level of services provided to people with special needs. This event is not just a discussion meeting but a real step towards a fairer health system that grants people with disabilities the right to a life full of hope and dignity.
