Post-Earthquakes North-West Syria

Update on the humanitarian situation in Syria following the recent earthquakes that struck the country. On February 6, 2023, earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 6.4 hit Syria and the Turkey-Syria border, respectively, causing widespread destruction and killing over 5,000 people. The worst affected areas were Aleppo and Idlib in the Northwest.
The Al-Ameen Organization has conducted a rapid needs assessment to comprehensively the humanitarian situation in the North West of Syria, specifically in the communities affected by the recent earthquake. The review was conducted across all significant humanitarian sectors, including displacement, shelter, non-food items (NFIs), food security and livelihood, protection, WASH, education, health, and emergency response. Our aim was to examine changes in the needs of the affected population post-earthquake.
Our report provides a multi-sectoral analysis of the humanitarian situation in the North West of Syria, offering insights into the current needs of the affected communities post-earthquake. The data collection was completed through face-to-face interviews with at least five Key Informants (KIs) in each community, totaling 1950 KIs. The KIs included representatives of various civilian bodies, such as local council members, teachers, NGO workers, and directors. KIs were selected based on criteria such as their knowledge of the population, local context and situation, professional background, leadership responsibilities or personal experience, and gender balance.
This report will help guide humanitarian efforts in the region and raise awareness of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria.
